This Just In: F1 racer Colapinto Replaces Sargeant at Williams for Rest of 2024 season

Franco Colapinto, an academy driver, will replace Logan Sargeant at Williams, weekends Italian Grand Prix for the remainder of the 2024 Formula One season, according to a statement from Williams.

Williams surprised everyone by promoting Colapinto, an academy driver, to take Sargeants spot for the remainder of the 2024 season with the Formula One team. The driver selection is whats surprising, not the fact that the American driver was fired in the middle of the season after a rough run.

Sargeant has struggled since being allowed to compete in Formula One in 2024, and his most recent collision in Zandvoort during First Practice only made matters worse. Carlos Sainz was supposed to take over for the American for the 2025 season, but the American was let go ahead of schedule.

Interestingly, the official announcement states that he will stay with the Williams family, albeit it is unclear in what role. The team decided to use their driver after considering names like Mick Schumacher, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, and Liam Lawson, who made rounds.

Colapinto with MP Motorsport

Colapinto will thus not finish his F2 career with MP Motorsport. Currently ranked sixth in the drivers standings with 96 points, Colapinto has finished on three podiums and one race. This year, he participated in the British Grand Prix FP1 session.
Colapinto won over Zak O-Sullivan and will start this weekend in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza with racing number #43. It is a fresh racing number that has never been used before. Who will take his place at MP Motorsport is yet unknown.

Making my Formula 1 debut with Williams is an honor. This is what dreams are made of. I am excited to be a part of the teams incredible heritage and quest to return to the forefront. It will be a steep learning curve to enter the F1 midseason, but I am ready for the challenge and will do all in my power to work with Alex and the team to make it successful.

James Vowles, the team manager, said, We have not made the decision to replace a driver in the middle of the season lightly, but we feel that this gives Williams the best opportunity to compete for points over the remainder of the season. We have upgraded the car significantly, so we must take advantage of every chance to get points in an extremely close middle contest.

Logan has given it every minute of his time with Williams, and we are grateful to him for all of his hard work and good attitude. We know that this is extremely challenging for him. Logan is still a talented driver, and we will support him as he pursues his racing career. Franco has a lot of speed and promise, and we are excited to see the things he can do in Formula 1.
